CHEF TALK WITH JULIE STEINHOBEL

It’s always great to see who’s behind all that fantastic cuisine! This month we caught up with Julie for an exclusive interview.

So Julie, what inspired you to be a chef?
I’ve loved cooking from a very young age. Back in South Africa my best friend’s mother did outside catering, I loved watching her work. She made such amazing food, she was an inspiration.

Where did you train as a chef?
Warwick’s Chef School, Hermanus, SA

What do you love most about being a chef?
Waking up and going to the kitchen, for me beats any office environment!

What is your worst kitchen nightmare?
Not being prepared for service.

What is your favourite food memory?
Baking multi colored cup cakes for my Grandparents when I was a child

What is your favourite dish to cook for your family?
When we get together we braai (BBQ) South African style

Who is your favourite chef and why?
Gordon Ramsey! After hard work and determination he’s made a name for himself as an exceptional chef and now helps others achieve the same. He gives his expertise back to the industry.

Master chef or Great British bake off?
Master chef!

If you could travel anywhere where in the world where would it be?
France or Italy to cook.

If your next meal was your last supper what would you cook?
A cape Malay dish – Bobotie with yellow rice!

How do you prefer your steak?
Med-Rare

Do you prefer sweet or savoury?
Savoury however I cannot like without chocolate!
